Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway:

"Five-Time" Jimmie Johnson will take center stage this Saturday night as the 2011 Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway rolls off under the lights. Jimmie has momentum on his side with his Kansas victory still fresh on everyone's mind.
His team intends to carry that into Charlotte where Jimmie Johnson is one of the best ever. Johnson is tied for the most All-Time Charlotte wins with legends Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison.

Jimmie Johnson is only four points behind point leader Carl Edwards. Is this week he takes over the top spot on his way to becoming the six-time Champion?

The Track:

Charlotte Motor Speedway is a mile and a half tri-oval with 24 degrees of banking in the turns. The track is fast and even though there is a preferred groove there is still enough room for a faster car to get by.
Charlotte Motor Speedway is the home track for NASCAR. The majority of the teams are based within 30 miles of the speedway and everybody brings their best stuff to Charlotte because everybody wants the bragging rights of winning their home race.

Race Distance:

334 Laps = 501 Miles
The Big Picture:

Last week in Kansas Carl Edwards took a one point lead over Kevin Harvick in the 2011 Chase for the Cup standings. The top eight drivers are separated by just twenty points with six races to go. This is a great battle.
The driver everyone is talking about is Jimmie Johnson. After last week's Kansas win Johnson sits in third place just four tiny points behind Edwards.

The 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Standings:

Carl Edwards -0
Kevin Harvick -1
Jimmie Johnson -4
Brad Keselowski -11
Matt Kenseth -12
Kurt Busch -16
Tony Stewart -19
Kyle Busch -20
Dale Earnhardt Jr. -43
Jeff Gordon -47
Ryan Newman -54
Denny Hamlin -79
Storylines:

This weekend Jimmie Johnson comes to Charlotte Motor Speedway with a very real chance of taking over the point lead and using this as a springboard to run away with his unprecedented sixth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup crown.
Jimmie Johnson is the top story of the week. Jimmie Johnson has momentum and is returning to a track that he has dominated in recent years. Can the driver they call "Five Time" become "Six Time?"

Media Coverage:

TV: ABC Saturday, October 15th, 7:00PM Eastern.
Radio: PRN and SIRIUS Satellite

Actual Race: 7:35PM Eastern

Recent Events:

2010 Winner: Jamie McMurray

2010 Polesitter: Jeff Gordon

Last Year:

The 2010 Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway was memorable because prior to last year no driver from outside the Chase had ever won the October race in Charlotte. That all changed when Jamie McMurray had the best car at the end and claimed the convincing win.
McMurray drove away from the pack during the final 21 lap run to the checkers and rolled to a comfortable victory while Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson battled for second with Busch getting the nod.

Predictions:

Jimmie Johnson has a reputation of dominating Charlotte Motor Speedway dating back to his sweeps in 2004 and 2005. However, over the last ten races Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne have both racked up more points than Johnson at Charlotte. Over the last three races Jimmie Johnson isn't even in the top ten in total Charlotte points earned.
I like Kyle Busch for the win on Saturday night. He has been strong here over the last few years including a strong run in May where he lead fifty-five laps before crashing out.

For my backup this week I am going with May Charlotte winner Kevin Harvick to complete the Charlotte Motor Speedway sweep. Harvick had a fast horse here on Memorial Day weekend and he will want to let the NASCAR world know not to overlook him in this Championship hunt. I expect that he will be a factor again this weekend.
